On Saturday, April 1st, Dant Clayton lost our beloved and inspirational co-founder, Ken Merrick. The journey began in 1978 as Ken and his son, Bruce Merrick, looked for ways to diversify the business interests. Looking for an opportunity to capitalize on Ken's extensive managerial and manufacturing experience and Bruce's naïve enthusiasm, their search resulted in the purchase of a small and distressed manufacturer in
Geneva, Alabama, Alum-a-Products in January 1979.

For the first six months of the business, Ken traveled every week to Geneva to manage the operation and prepare to move the business to Louisville. In June operations began in what is now building 3 on the Dant Clayton campus with a crew of 12 people. The products offered were limited to the Alum-a-Stand and a narrow selection of renovation materials.

Ken’s experience, discipline and commitment helped the company navigate through serious challenges in the early years. In the first 18 months, the company experienced major challenges, which prevented operations in either location for a period of time. Even in the face of that adversity, the business grew an average of 20% per year for the next 20 years. The foundation for this growth was fostered by Ken’s unwavering integrity, his belief in himself and those around him and his commitment to lifelong learning.

Beyond his business pursuits, Ken set a high standard for helping others in a variety of volunteer activities, principally in education and social services. His legacy leaves an indelible mark on the business and those who worked with him.
