On your mark, get set, GO!  The long awaited green flag will fly proudly this Sunday, July 27th at Weedsport Speedway when the 2014 Sportsman Classic gets underway.  Located on the Cayuga County Fairgrounds in Weedsport, NY this dirt race track has underwent dramatic improvements over the past few months.

When it first opened on July 24th, 1955, Stan Dudzinski was fulfilling a commitment to his wife to build a race track.  The 1/3 mile speedway was constructed right through their berry patch.  Changing ownership in the 70s, the racing season was extended all year to include snowmobile races in the winter months. It was also during this time that Weedsport hosted the famous weekly video magazine, “This Week in DIRT.” It was notorious for being one of the toughest tracks to gain a feature win on, and the list of former track champions reads like a who’s-who of legendary drivers. By the 80s, the speedway had underwent another transition and become known as a rockin’ concert venue.

It was in 2013, when the venue was purchased by Al Heinke that the new vision for Weedsport began to take shape. His goal was to provide a complete racing venue for racers, their friends and family, and for the fans looking for motorsports entertainment. A part of fulfilling that goal was to install new grandstands, hospitality suites, and a press box. Dant Clatyon was able to partner with Weedsport to construct a larger seating area via an aluminum grandstand that features blue powder coated risers.  The new stand also includes twin 12x42 hospitality suites on the left and right sides, and an 8x30 press box with filming platform. All of which comes together to create the ultimate fan experience on race day!

Today the venue will hardly be recognizable by those that have attended in the past, but the spirit of racing is buried deep in the ground of this dirt track, and will continue to call race fans to its stand for years to come.

Dant Clayton is honored to have played a part in helping to reenergize this classic speedway.
